Help full hints to keep in mind when changing gear sets Drive shaft taper area should be cleaned up on a lathe or use emery cloth on any high spots by hand. This will insure the pinion will in fact seat out properly on drive shaft. When replacing new gears or new drive shafts, the new combination will now need to be shimmed. This is also the only way you can test that the drive shaft is not bent and that you have properly cleaned up taper area. This is the area were pinion seats out on drive shaft. If you do not have a dial indicator you can tell shaft is bent when you obtain different feller gauge reading. Rotate the pinion 180 degrees, the feeler gauge reading should read the same unless the shaft is bent. Drive shaft thread requires blue Quick stick 248 medium strength Loctite, product number 37684. Please note, some newer synthetic lower unit oil dissolves other Loctite products. Always change drive shaft bearing when changing parts. If you are sending your drive shaft for shimming, we require thrust washer, thrust bearing and bearing retainer. There is no charge for this service if you are purchasing item from T.C. Electronics/Marine.
